If you don’t take care of your employees they will leave. How do you know if you’re doing enough to invest in your employees? Our own Cheryl Hyatt recently wrote about the importance of employee appreciation in Inside Higher Ed.
One fundamental to effective employee recognition is being targeted. Tossing out vague platitudes comes across as insincere and can be counter productive. Hyatt writes, “Give personalized appreciation not generic compliments. Stop to identify exactly how they contribute to the success of your team or the latest project and then offer targeted feedback rather than worn-out platitudes. Think in terms of character traits, individual skills, and helpful practices. Be attuned to attributes, not only outcomes.”
