It’s a subtle green arc around a person’s picture on LinkedIn emblazoned with the words Open to Work. Since LinkedIn introduced the Open to Work feature in 2020 to increase visibility to recruiters and job opportunities, it has been polarizing. Some professionals fear it will come off as desperate. Others point out that if people don’t know you’re looking, they can’t connect you with opportunities. Whether or not it’s advisable to proclaim that you’re Open to Work is a topic for another blog post. Today, I want to talk about something that happens to all of us—whether we are job seeking or not. When you go on LinkedIn, you will see one of your connections who is Open to Work. Here’s the key moment. What do you do? Do you scroll past, fearful that you might find yourself in an unstable job soon or just looking for a more interesting post? That is a mistake.
When someone is seeking a new opportunity, it can be a vulnerable time. Take a moment to share a word of encouragement. Add a comment wishing them the best. Cite one of the traits you appreciate about them, which will make them an asset to their next employer. If it’s a close colleague, consider sending them an email, letting them know how much you admire them and offering to be a reference if needed or suggesting a position they would be well suited for. People remember those who stand with them in uncertain times. Your kindness and solidarity will serve your colleague and strengthen your network. It’s an amazing return for the few moments it takes to share. When you cultivate this simple habit, you’ll see your professional network flourish.
