Netflix’s new show The Chair delves into some of the issues in higher education. The show features Ji-Yoon Kim, played by Sandra Oh, who has just been named the first female chair of the English Department at fictional Pembroke University. Ji-Yoon’s dream job is full of nightmare scenarios as she must navigate the challenges of budget constraints, campus controversies, and serving an increasingly multicultural student body, while leading a largely white, male faculty. Fans who learned to love Sandra Oh on Grey’s Anatomy won’t be disappointed by her performance in this show. Catch a preview of the show, and the way it intersects with the real pressures in academia, through this interview on NPR’s Pop Culture Happy Hour.
