Senior Major Gifts Officer

Mount Aloysius College (, seeks nominations and applications for the position of Senior Major Gifts Officer.  Reporting to the Vice President for Institutional Advancement, the Senior Major Gifts Officer will be a strong communicator-both written and oral, and a methodical, detail oriented individual with excellent time management skills. They must be able to address multiple projects simultaneously, while meeting deadlines.

The SMGO will spend 70% of their time developing long-term philanthropic relationships, using Moves Management, with an assigned group of donors and prospects with the ultimate goal of soliciting these individuals for a major gift to the College. The Senior Major Gift Officer will be responsible for identification of potential donors and development of donor research, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies, surrounding a portfolio of 150-200 prospects.  These donors should have the capacity to make 4-6 figure gifts, thus helping meet annual fundraising goals and campaign expectations.

The SMGO will spend the remaining 30% of their time providing prospect management and research by preparing thorough, accurate, and concisely written research reports on potential prospects and donors. This may include biographical and financial information, potential for philanthropic support, areas of interest, affiliations of individuals, and research on corporations and foundations. Producing complex data lists, analysis, and providing data updates will be key elements of this area of support. This will be done to support the needs of the SMGO, as well as those of the VPIA, President of the College, and campaign volunteers.

They will also manage the IA Office Development Data Specialist and oversee regular maintenance of the database.


The following duties/responsibilities are specific to Major Giving:

  • Broad knowledge of principles and practices of institutional advancement and major gift fundraising.
  • Ability to work effectively with the campus community and external customers.
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
  • Ability to provide leadership in gift solicitation.
  • Ability to recruit, motivate and encourage volunteers.
  • Ability to listen effectively to discern donors’ interests and concerns.
  • Ability to travel.
  • Ability to expand and maintain relationships with relevant stakeholders in the philanthropic community, donors, and peers.
  • Able to represent the College to key prospects and at key events in defined geographic areas.
  • Pursues appropriate professional development opportunities so as to raise the awareness of, and enhance the image of the Institutional Advancement Office.
  • Provides verbal and written reports on work-related activities as required.
  • Works as an active and integral member of the Institutional Advancement Team by sharing information and assisting team members as needed to advance the objectives of the Department.

The following duties/responsibilities are specific to Prospect Management and Research:

  • Manages IA Office Development Data Specialist.
  • Maintain protocols for prospect management, produce weekly moves management reports, and monitor overall departmental progress monthly, towards portfolio visit and financial goals.
  • Conduct ongoing prospect research and create prospect profiles and supporting materials for solicitations, events, and stewardship activities.
  • Lead donor recognition and stewardship initiatives, including impact reports, stewardship letters and annual correspondence connected to awards, scholarships, and funding priorities.
  • Develop and implement strategies for continued engagement of donors.
  • Oversee the database policies and procedures and create methodologies and scheduled maintenance to ensure data integrity.
  • Oversee all gift entry, gift processing, acknowledgement, and pledge reminder systems for the department. Produce correspondence that is accurate and timely and in accordance with IRS regulations.
  • Provide a wide assortment of complex analytical reports in support of development related activities. Coordinate all departmental data requests, including donor analysis, direct mail lists, volunteer assignments, and financial reporting.
  • Oversee the production of all listings for the Annual Report.
  • Serve as the primary liaison between the IT Department and the Advancement Development Office and ensure ongoing communication and smooth interface between Raiser’s Edge and other school data systems.


  • Bachelor’s degree (Master’s degree preferred), from an accredited college or University.
  • Demonstrated track record in securing and managing 4-6 figure gifts.
  • Five to seven years of fundraising experience with major gifts, preferably in higher education.
  • Thorough background in fundraising best practices and experience in Raisers Edge database management for donor and solicitation records and WealthEngine, is a plus.
