It’s New York Fashion Week. Designers are premiering collections that will wow audiences and make waves across the industry. Much to the chagrin of designers who have poured their heart and soul into a collection, some of the most talked about moments of the week will be the mistakes. The crooked hemline. The heel that fell off. The dress that was all wrong.
Interviews are all about how you present yourself to a potential employer, and your choice of wardrobe is a fundamental part of that equation. I received one piece of advice about interview attire that has never steered me wrong: Never wear something for the first time. There is a confidence boost to wearing a new outfit that is alluring, but the risk is not worth it.
The shoes are painful and you end up wincing in the interview. Your pants end up being too short and you’re distracted by tugging your trouser legs down and fumble your answer. Don’t be remembered for the wrong reason. Test out a new outfit, even around the house for the day, before wearing it to an interview. When you know your attire serves you well by being professional, comfortable, functional, and polished, then you can have the confidence to give your full attention to your conversation.
