There comes a time in everyone’s career when it is time for a change. You have grown in your current institution and find yourself chafing in your current role. You’re ready for a new challenge in a fresh context. Here are 3 steps to lay the groundwork to make the shift to a new college:

• Reflect: what do you find satisfying about your current job? What isn’t a good fit? Consider what works, what doesn’t, and look honestly at why you want a change. Is it a case of the grass always being greener or do you have legitimate reasons to uproot your career?

• Read: Educate yourself on the university you are seeking to obtain a position with. What are their mission and values? How do those resonate with your own principles? What strategic initiatives are they undertaking? How could your skills further their goals?

• Reach out: Identify the individuals in your network who work at the college and would be willing to share their experience and give you additional insight. Consider who in your network might be willing and able to make an introduction.
