Careers develop over many seasons with a variety of employers. As you grow and develop, you will transition through institutions. It’s possible that an organization you previously left may be the best fit for the next step in your career. We have four tips for graciously applying to an employer you previously left.

  1. Don’t skirt past it. Acknowledge the elephant in the room with a proactive, positive comment: I’m excited at the prospect of being part of St. Stephen College’s mission again.
  2. Express your gratitude. Regardless of the circumstances under which you left, share how you grew and benefited from your time with an organization.
  3. Articulate values. You will be a stronger cultural fit for a role because of your experience with an organization. Explain how their values resonate with your own.
  4. Leverage insight. Outline how the experience you’ve had at other institutions enables you to bring fresh perspective and additional strategy to their organization.
