It is a nerve wracking time in higher education. From enrollment declines to funding uncertainty, it’s a challenging time to be a higher education leader. College leadership should not only consider the tasks before them, but the best ways to collaborate with key stakeholders, such as college boards. In a recent article in Inside Higher Ed, Peter Eckel discusses what higher ed leaders can anticipate—and how they should respond. He notes,

“Expect more anxiety and energy in the board room. Board members feel the pressure on higher education and their institutions. Some boards will amplify that pressure and others will help dissipate it. Nevertheless, expect boards to be 1) well-read on higher education because it’s in the national headlines and 2) animated about what they are reading and how they are translating that into the institutional context.”
